I used to live in Berlin, Germany, for three years before shifting permanently to The Hague. Back in Berlin, my friends and I had this ritual of seeking out the best brunch and coffee spots in the city whenever Saturday arrived. When I came to The Hague, I found myself in search of the same. And that search led me to discover some unique cafés.

The Hague doesn't get talked about enough when it comes to cafes. Amsterdam gets all the attention, but some of the most interesting coffee spots I've been to are right here - a century-old bookshop, a converted church, a tearoom you can only reach by walking through a rose garden. Below you will find five unique cafes in Hague I keep going back to. A truly unique one is right at the end, so make sure not to skip it!

The Hague is easy to reach from Amsterdam (50 min), Rotterdam (25 min), and Delft (7 min) by train. So don't let distance stop you. Take your umbrella out for sun or rain and bookmark these for your future visit.

1. The Bookstor Cafe - A Bookshop That Happens to Serve Coffee

📍Noordeinde 39 | Open daily, 8:00–20:00 | bookstor.nl

On number one I would always place a spot that has books, because books and coffee make the best combination together. Wouldn't you agree?

Bookstor Cafe is on Noordeinde, right across the street from the King's palace, and it's been a bookshop for nearly a century. The cafe weaves through multiple rooms with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, mismatched chairs of every size and colour, and cosy nooks where you can disappear for a couple of hours with a book you just picked off the shelf.

Some of the books are too special to sell and are only there to be browsed through, which somehow makes it even better. There's also a hidden back garden that most visitors don't find on their first visit, which is reason enough to come back.

Order the carrot cake and a hot chocolate. We did, and we were very happy people.

2. Bistro Café Loft - A Church Turned Cafe

📍Pomonaplein 49A | Wed & Sun: 9:30–18:30, Thu–Sat: 9:30–22:30, Closed Mon & Tue | bistroloft.nl

On cafe number two, you have a church. Yes, a church!

Owners Erik and Defne bought a former Christian church and remodelled it into a cafe and creative space they call L.O.F.T. - Land of Free Thought. The building has high ceilings, natural light streaming through the old church windows, and rotating art on the walls. It's one of those places where you look up and remember you're sitting inside a space that used to hold Sunday sermons.

The building is surrounded by water on three sides, so on a good day the terrace is one of the most peaceful spots in the city.

The menu is fully vegetarian and vegan - dishes like the aubergine parmigiana and the avocado "Happy Feet" are worth ordering. They also do breakfast, cakes, organic wine, and Thursday evening live music.

3. Tearoom De Waterkant - Not Quite a Cafe, But Better

📍Westbroekpark | Open daily 10:00–21:00, from King's Day to Prinsjesdag (roughly April–September) | denhaag.com/waterkant

The third spot is technically not a cafe, but it earns its place here because of its casual nature, coffee on the menu, and the option to simply laze about its grounds next to the water.

Tearoom De Waterkant is hidden between the trees just behind the Rosarium (the international rose garden) in Westbroekpark. They serve fresh lunches, coffee, tea, wine, and prosecco on what might honestly be the most beautiful grass terrace in The Hague.

But here's the real bonus: for a few euros you can rent a rowing boat and paddle around the park's waterways. That's a cafe visit and a mini-adventure in one afternoon.

The catch: it's seasonal. Only open from late April through September. Worth planning around.

4. CoffeeCats - A Cafe With Cats

📍Weimarstraat | Wed - Sun: 10:00 - 17:00, Closed Mon & Tue | Reservations highly recommended | https://coffeecats.nl/

The fourth cafe on this list had to be one with animals. CoffeeCats is a cat cafe on Weimarstraat with six resident cats - Mimi, Saar, Jambo, Kay, Poekie, and Meissie - who are all available for cuddles while you have your coffee and lunch.

It's small and cosy, and because of that it fills up fast. Reserve ahead - they ask for a small reservation fee of 5€ that is fully deductible from your final cafe bill.

They also have a private space for events like meetings or high tea, which is a wonderfully strange sentence to write about a cat cafe. If you're more of a dog person, you'll probably still enjoy it. The cats don't care either way.

5. Lola Bikes & Coffee - Where Cyclists and Coffee Lovers Collide

📍Noordeinde 91 | Mon–Fri: 9:00–17:30, Sat–Sun: 8:30–18:00 | lolabikesandcoffee.nl

A cafe for bike enthusiasts - or anyone who appreciates very good coffee.

Lola Bikes & Coffee has been awarded the title of best coffee bar in the Netherlands, which is no small thing in a country that runs on coffee. The owner is passionate about both specialty coffee and road bikes, and the space reflects exactly that: beautiful bikes hang on the walls while you sip what might be the best flat white in The Hague.

It's also on Noordeinde, just down the street from The Bookstor Cafe, so you could easily do both in one morning. They have their own Lola Roast coffee blend and a cycling club that meets here if you want to combine caffeine with actual exercise. Even if you don't cycle, the coffee alone is worth the visit.

Getting to The Hague: Direct trains from Amsterdam Centraal (50 min), Rotterdam Centraal (25 min), Delft (7 min), and Schiphol Airport (30 min). All five cafes are reachable on foot or by tram from Den Haag Centraal station.
